School Highlight – Burwood Girls High School
The Fusion Sydney South team have been amongst it all at Burwood Girls High School throughout May! Check out the highlights below
“Whanau” Polynesian Artwork Launch
On Tuesdays and Fridays, Pacific Islander students come together to learn about their culture and build positive community. We reached a huge milestone and celebrated a finished artwork that has been months in the making! The launch was attended by many of the girls, the wellbeing team, the principal, and Fusion staff. Students shared their experience creating the artwork and what Whanau (“far-now”) – Family – means to them. A red ribbon was cut to officially launch the artwork and we mingled – eating canapes and drinking sparkling apple juice!
Polynesian Excursion to Australian Museum
The Pacific Islander students took a trip to the Australian Museum the next week! We had a special tour of a rarely seen collection of artefacts from around the Pacific; learned about the preparation of tapa (cloth) and motifs used in different communities; and met with a Polynesian designer. The students put their creativity in motion and began to create their own motifs and patterns. They will be designing a dress to be showcased by the Museum in June and then entered into the official Museum collection!
Defuse Antibullying Seminar with Year 7
The team spent time with Year 7, running our annual Antibullying Seminar at the school. Defuse puts students in the shoes of the bully, the victim and the bystander, and encourages students to be culture changers and upstanders!
Congratulations to all the young people involved with Fusion this month! Hope you had a great time and learned a tonne! See you around the playground!
